Taste and Odor (Off Flavor)
Off flavor in fish can occur when there is a build up of geosmin/2-MIB in the water. These compounds, which are caused by algal blooms, are responsible for the earthy, musty odor and taste in your fish. As the fish swim around in water with geosmin/2-MIB, the contaminants are getting stored into the fatty tissue in turn causing the fish to have an off-flavor.
