Odor and Taste Contaminants(Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborneol 2-MIB)
Geosmin and 2-MIB (methyl isoborneol) are the two most commonly tested taste and odor compounds in drinking water. These compounds, which are caused by algal blooms, are responsible for the earthy, musty odor and taste in water.
AEL has been performing this analysis for municipalities across the United States for over 11 years, and we have received samples from almost all of the lower 48 states.
Some water sources have breakouts of geosmin/2-MIB in the spring and summer time, while other locations around the U.S. see a spike during winter months.
When municipalities receive consumer complaints, they can turn to AEL for routine testing to detect these compounds. AEL provides accurate and quick results so adjustments can be made to your system in a timely manner. If the compounds are present, the municipalities have several options to combat the problem. If you are trying to decide which carbon treatment is best for you, we can help with that, too.
AEL performs analyses for the Food & Beverage industry as well. We have performed taste and odor testing for the USDA. We can test your product to see what negative impact geosmin / 2-MIB may be having.

Reporting Limit
Geosmin 1 ng/L or 1 part per trillion. 2-MIB 1 ng/L or 1 parts per trillion. MDL values for each compound are below 1 ppt.
Holding Time
Three days unpreserved or 7 days if preserved with sodium omadine.
Turnaround Time
2-3 working days. Same day and 24-hour rush available.
